Overview

The Lower Mustang Trek brings you into the hidden world of the old Buddhist kingdom of Mustang, also called the Tibetan empire, and is therefore closely related to Tibet. Tibetan Buddhism is still being practiced in a very pure form and villages are built in Tibetan style, with whitewashed houses with firewood tucked on the roofs.

Mustang is a rain shadow area called the trans-Himalayan territory in Nepal. It’s great to do for all-age travelers from all around the world. Furthermore, the landscape and the pure Buddhism cultures with their bright-colored fields are like an oasis.

Muktinath is one of the major highlights of this trekking route as it is religiously important. Hindus and Buddhist devotees from different parts of Nepal and India visit Muktinath. The main shrine is a pagoda-shaped temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu; there are 108 waterspouts around the Temple.

The Jwala Mai temple nearby contains a spring and an eternal flame fed by natural gas underground. Since ancient times, their divine flames of jwala have been worshiped as Jwaladevi (the goddess of flame). Thus, hiking Muktinath, and visiting lord Bishnu temple and its surrounding is also a must-see place in the Annapurna zone.

Best time for trek to Lower Mustang territory

The best time to hike in Lower Mustang is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months offer the most favorable weather conditions and the clearest mountain views. Here’s a breakdown of the seasons:

Hiking in the spring month (March to May):

This is the pre-monsoon season when the weather is mild and stable. The temperatures gradually start to rise, and the rhododendron forests along the trail come to life with vibrant blooms. Generally, sky is clear clear, providing excellent visibility of the mountains. However, the lower regions of the trail can be a bit dusty due to the dry weather.

From September to November months considered the best time for trekking in Nepal, autumn offers stable weather conditions with clear skies and moderate temperatures. The monsoon season ends in September, leaving the trails clean and green. Towering mountain views are exceptionally clear during this period, making it an ideal time for photography and enjoying the scenic beauty.

Both spring and autumn seasons attract a significant number of trekkers, so you can expect some crowds along the trail and in guest houses. However, the Lower Mustang Trek is less crowded compared to popular routes like the Annapurna Circuit, so you can still enjoy a relatively quieter experience.

It’s important to note that the winter months from December until February in Lower Mustang is extremely cold, with heavy snowfall in higher elevations, making the trek challenging and risky. Monsoon season (June to August) brings light rainfall and can make the trails little bit slippery and less enjoyable.

Likewise, Jomsom flights are often unavailable in July and August (around two months) because of higher risk. Despite that, before embarking on your trek, it’s always a good idea to check the current weather conditions and consult with us for the most up-to-date information.

May 12, 2022

We found a local agency and booked our Mustang trekking in Nepal. It was a good decision to support the local economy. Ammar, the owner of the agency offered us the best travel plan at a cheaper price than any popular trekking operator agencies via online.

Our Guide Kamal kc was amazing and easy-going and made our journey awesome. Ammar fixed and hired a porter in Jomsom airport which was best for us to travel cheaper.

The weather was great for the Mountains view and the valleys. We enjoyed perfectly so we recommend the “Gokyo Treks Agency” Highly to anyone who want to visit the lower mustang trek in Nepal.

Ammar and his agency was recommended by one of our friend who went to climb Mera peak on November 2021. We follow their advice and booked everything for our Lower mustang trek for a week long holiday in the Himalayas with them.

Ammar answered every question shortly and organize us for flights, hotel, guide, and a porter. He also picked us up from the airport and invited for dinner at his home.

All went smooth, Guide Ram was awesome and highly experienced and a porter Bude waiba was friendly and made our journey fantastic. They are honest and genuine travel operator based in Kathmandu and highly recommends.
