Overview

The Phoksundo Lake trek is situated in the remote Dolpo region and was opened to foreign visitors in 1992. This trek is highly esteemed for its opportunities to research snow leopards, explore remarkable culture, and observe diverse flora and fauna.

Moreover, Dolpo’s culture is both unique and mystical. The local population resembles Tibetans in appearance and primarily speaks ‘Khaam,’ which is similar to but distinct from the Tibetan language. This trek offers unparalleled natural beauty, with exotic landscapes captured vividly by renowned director Eric Valli in his film “Caravan.”

Significantly, Shey Phoksundo Lake, the deepest lake in Nepal, is located in this region. The Phoksundo trek is a magical experience, providing sightings of endangered species such as the snow leopard, musk deer, blue sheep, great Tibetan sheep, and Himalayan tahr. Additionally, the lake’s turquoise waters, reflecting the snowy Kanjiroba Mountain massif, create a breathtakingly beautiful scene.

The trek features stunning forests, rivers, and waterfalls, making it one of Nepal’s most magnificent nature trails. Basic lodges are available along the route, allowing trekkers to visit Phoksundo Lake throughout the year, with the exception of winter. The lake is also considered sacred by Buddhists and followers of the Bon-Po religion, contributing to its growing popularity in recent years.

Furthermore, the Shey Phoksundo Trek is Dolpo’s only lodge-style trek and is relatively easy, as it does not involve crossing high passes. Hikers traverse through beautiful mixed forests and picturesque traditional villages within Phoksundo National Park.
