Overview

The Mustang Thorong La Pass Trek opens the once Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang, tucked away from the rest of the world, north of the Annapurna Himalayan range of Nepal. Only fewer visits to Lomanthang because of expensive permit fees likewise, Thorong la is most demanding in terms of cheaper permit fees.

Lo-Mustang, the capital city, is surrounded by fixed walls and ruled by King Jigme Palvar Bista. It is an ideal destination for visiting Buddhist monasteries and ancient caves, attracting many hikers. Additionally, it provides stunning views of Mount Dhaulagiri (8,167m/26,795 feet) and Annapurna I (8,091m/26,545 feet), along with multiple other 7,000 meter mountains.

Hiking through the trans-Himalayan region is unique due to its arid valleys, eroded canyons, ochre valley, yak caravans, and colorful mud-brick houses set against majestic mountains. This creates a distinctive experience in the medieval kingdom of Mustang.

Furthermore, the upper Mustang and Manang regions feature barren landscapes with eroded sandstone pillars and moraine terraces. Together with the colorful mosaic of reds, yellows, and browns, these areas offer an incredible travel experience. Additionally, Mustang, situated in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, may be the last remnant of pristine Tibetan culture.

Similarly, Thorong La, at 5,416m (17,710 feet), is a top trekking destination in Nepal. During winter, it resembles an ice climbing trip, so proper hiking gear is essential. Combining the Upper Mustang trek with the Thorong La pass trek is popular for its rich scenery, diverse culture, and varied flora and fauna.

Although crossing Thorong La from the Mustang side is less common than the anti-clockwise route, it is still a rewarding journey. Thus, with appropriate trekking gear, including hiking boots and walking poles, the Annapurna mountain journey promises a memorable adventure.

Besides Lo-Manthang there are two other fascinating valleys worth visiting. The western valley Tingkhar, the sight of Raja’s summer palace, Kimling and Phuwa as well as the Gompa of Namgyal (The Monastery of Victory) is the fresh and most active Gompa in Lo. In the eastern valley placed the Chosar, also rich in gompas and the valley is the main trading route to Lhasa.

This is an opportunity to visit two other villages on your return trek. Climbs steadily to the pass marked by a cairn, offering a last glimpse of Lo-Manthang. We cross the highest pass on this trek and arrive in Ghar Gompa (3,920 Meters). It is very older than the Samye monastery in Tibet, supposed to be built around 730AD. Crossing the pass 4,100m, descend down to the way in Dhakmar village.

Day 10Dhakmar to Samar trekking (3,540m/11,615 feet), 6 hours

From Dhakmar the way goes down to until Ghami (3,460m) the huge greenery village in Mustang where we can see the ancient monastery and stupas with. You can see the local houses like caves. Continuous ascend to Nyi La pass and descend to Samar village using the same route.

Day 11Samar to Muktinath trek (3,800m/12,468 feet), 6 hours

Today is our one of the toughest day of the trip. We climb up for a while and walk through the villages to Muktinath. This route is very popular for the Fossil stone “Saligrams” mainly between Tetang to Gyu La Pass 4,077m. It also offers a 140 Degree panoramic view of the Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Tukuche Himalayan ranges. Muktinath is a holy place both for Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage people. The Temple is faithful to Lord Vishnu and has 108 waterspouts around it. Jwala Mai Temple which has a gorgeous natural spring and an eternal flame fueled by natural gas is another attraction. You will have also a panoramic view of Mt. Dhaulagiri and its surrounding peaks.

Day 12Trek over Thorong la (5,416m/17,770 feet). Descend to Phedi, 8 hours

Today is a challenging day as we ascend to the Thorong La summit (5,416m), taking roughly 5 hours. Recognized as the world’s widest pass in the Himalayas, it offers nearly 360-degree mountain views. However, altitude and snow can pose significant challenges, especially if the pass is covered by heavy snow. This ascent should be a lifetime unforgettable experience for trekkers. An early start is crucial for a successful mission. Afterward, descend downhill to Phedi through rocky mountains and grassy trails.

Day 13Manang village trek (3,400m/11,155 feet), 5 hours

Our descent continues through the Marshyangdi Valley to Manang village, home to the legendary Yeti. There are so many side trips either visiting Tilicho Lake (5,100 meters) known as the world’s highest lake, Ice lake, Gangapurna Lake and Gangapurna glacier, and more.

Day 14Express drive from Manang to Besisahar, 7 hours.

Jeep drive from Manang to Besi Sahar is another option to grab the trekking opportunities in a short period compared with usual trekking itineraries to hike the Annapurna circuit. Traveling on a bus/jeep from Manang to Besisahar distance is 96.8 kilometers and takes about 8 hours.

Likewise, the trek takes about 4 days of downhill walking to get to town but trekkers can enjoy the scenic view of the great mountains within a kilometer’s distance. However, as you have been to the Thorong la summit and crossed the world’s widest pass, you had almost the top highlights of Annapurna massive. Therefore we don’t recommend travelers walk further downhill after Manang.

Day 15Overland drive out to Kathmandu, 6 hours. Good Bye Kathmandu.

We catch the regular Micro Bus to Kathmandu. We drive along the Marsyangdi River bank passing several villages and bridges to Mugling. Later on, follow the Mahendra highway to reach Kathmandu Town. In this way, our trip ends, and we wish you a wonderful journey back home.
