Overview

The Mustang Thorong La Pass Trek opens the once Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang, tucked away from the rest of the world, north of the Annapurna Himalayan range of Nepal. Only fewer visits to Lomanthang because of expensive permit fees likewise, Thorong la is most demanding in terms of cheaper permit fees.

Lo-Mustang, the capital city is fixed walled around and ruled by a Jigme Palvar Bista king. A perfect destination for visiting Buddhists Monasteries and ancient caves of the Mustang attracts hikers. Likewise, the trek offers a great sights of mount Dhaulagiri at 8167m/26,795 feet and Annapurna first 8,091m/26,545 feet including 30 other 6000 meters of mountains.

Hike over the trans-Himalayan region has arid valleys, eroded canyons, ochre valley, yak caravans, and colorful-painted mud-brick houses on the backdrop of majestic mountains makes your medieval walled kingdom Mustang very special one.

Upper part of the Mustang and Manang has a barren landscape of eroded sandstone pillars, and intermittent moraine terraces. Together with the present, a colorful mosaic is made up principally of earthen reds, yellows, and browns. The incredible travel Mustang lying under the rain shadow of the Himalayas is possibly the last remnant of pristine Tibetan culture.

Likewise, Thorong la elevation 5,416m (17,710 feet) and is one of the top first trek destinations in Nepal. Thorong la in the wintertime is like an ice climbing trip, so better to prepare with professional hiking gear. Upper Mustang combined with Thorong la pass trek is a popular trail, rich in scenery apart from the diverse culture and flora and fauna.

Cross over Thorong la pass from Mustang side is less popular comparing the anti-clockwise route. However, if trekkers hike with proper trekking gear such as hiking boots, walking poles, and enough clothes then the Annapurna mountain journey should be worthwhile.

Climbing over another pass at 3600 meters the route makes a long gentle descent to Charang. The huge five-stock white Dzong and red Gompa is an interesting visit to observe collections of statues and Thangkas as well as many large paintings of seated Buddha.

Day 07Tsarang to Lo Manthang trek (3,840m/12,599 feet), 5/6 hours

Our nature trail descends about 100 meters down from Charang, crosses the Charang – Chu and climbs steeply up a rocky trail to a cairn on a ridge and continues to climb. Finally, from a ridge at 3850m. There is a view of the walled city of LO. After a short descent, cross a stream then climb up into the plateau of Lo- Manthang.

Day 08Lo-Manthang, day hiking. Exploring Lomanthang.

Another day in Lo – Manthang gives you the chance to explore its many sights; the Tall Champa Lakhang (God house,) the red Thugchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa, and the Raja’s Palace; as well as to gaze at the surrounding sweeping views of the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalaya. Besides Lo-Manthang there are two other fascinating valleys worth visiting. The western valley Tingkhar, the sight of Raja’s summer palace, Kimling and Phuwa as well as the Gompa of Namgyal (The Monastery of Victory) is the fresh and most active Gompa in Lo. In the eastern valley placed the Chosar, also rich in gompas and the valley is the main trading route to Lhasa.

Day 09Descend to Dhakmar village (3,520m/11,549 feet), 8/9 hours via Ghar Gompa.

This is an opportunity to visit two other villages on your return trek. Climbs steadily to the pass marked by a cairn, offering a last glimpse of Lo-Manthang. We cross the highest pass on this trek and arrive in Ghar Gompa (3,920 Meters). It is very older than the Samye monastery in Tibet, supposed to be built around 730AD. Crossing the pass 4,100m, descend down to the way in Dhakmar village.

Day 10Dhakmar to Samar trekking (3,540m/11,615 feet), 6/7 hours

From Dhakmar the way goes down to until Ghami (3,460m) the huge greenery village in Mustang where we can see the ancient monastery and stupas with. You can see the local houses like caves. Continuous ascend to Nyi La pass and descend to Samar village using the same route.

Day 11Samar to Muktinath trek (3,800m/12,468 feet), 6/7 hours

Today is our one of the toughest day of the trip. We climb up for a while and walk through the villages to Muktinath. This route is very popular for the Fossil stone “Saligrams” mainly between Tetang to Gyu La Pass 4,077m. It also offers a 140 Degree panoramic view of the Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Tukuche Himalayan ranges. Muktinath is a holy place both for Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage people. The Temple is faithful to Lord Vishnu and has 108 waterspouts around it. Jwala Mai Temple which has a gorgeous natural spring and an eternal flame fueled by natural gas is another attraction. You will have also a panoramic view of Mt. Dhaulagiri and its surrounding peaks.

Day 12Trek over Thorong la (5,416m/17,770 feet). Descend to Phedi, 8/9 hours

Today is another challenging day for us to ascend up to the Thorong la summit (5,416m above sea level) roughly takes about 5 hours. It is recognized as the world’s widest pass of the Himalayas. You will have almost the best view of the mountains within the 360 deg angle. However, some problems may arise due to the altitude and snow. It often causes terrible problems to cross over Thorong la if it is covered by heavy snow. This should be a lifetime unforgettable experience for trekkers. An early start is important to complete a successful mission. Descend downhill at Phedi through rocky mountains and grassy trails.

Day 13Manang village trek (3,400m/11,155 feet), 5/6 hours

Our descent continues through the Marshyangdi Valley to Manang village, home to the legendary Yeti. There are so many side trips either visiting Tilicho Lake (5,100 meters) known as the world’s highest lake, Ice lake, Gangapurna Lake and Gangapurna glacier, and more.

Day 14Express drive from Manang to Besisahar, 7/8 hours.

Jeep drive from Manang to Besi Sahar is another option to grab the trekking opportunities in a short period compared with usual trekking itineraries to hike the Annapurna circuit. Traveling on a bus/jeep from Manang to Besisahar distance is 96.8 kilometers and takes about 8 hours.

Likewise, the trek takes about 4 days of downhill walking to get to town but trekkers can enjoy the scenic view of the great mountains within a kilometer’s distance. However, as you have been to the Thorong la summit and crossed the world’s widest pass, you had almost the top highlights of Annapurna massive. Therefore we don’t recommend travelers walk further downhill after Manang.

Day 15Overland drive out to Kathmandu, 6 hours. Good Bye Kathmandu.

We catch the regular Micro Bus to Kathmandu. We drive along the Marsyangdi River bank passing several villages and bridges to Mugling. Later on, follow the Mahendra highway to reach Kathmandu Town. In this way, our trip ends, and we wish you a wonderful journey back home.
