Hiking clockwise from Gokyo Lakes to Chola Pass presents a tougher challenge due to steep and slippery trail conditions compared to other routes. We regularly seek feedback from our clients upon their return to Kathmandu regarding the difficulty level of Chola Pass. Consistently, their experiences align, noting it as a more adventurous and challenging route, especially compared to the Lobuche to Chola Pass direction.
To ensure a better holiday experience, we prioritize visiting the Everest Base Camp first before crossing the pass to Gokyo Lakes. Our program is designed to incorporate ample rest days and a gradual ascent, allowing for acclimatization to higher altitudes. This approach aims to make this journey more manageable and enjoyable for our trekkers.

Visit the Sagarmatha National Park office where we pass the check post checking a park entrance fee. We follow the riverbed of this valley where the major river meets each other. Cross over the Hillary bridge, the steep ascent to Namche Bazaar. On the way in between the pine forest, we have a splendid view of Everest (8,848m) and Lhotse (8,516m.) mountains. Namche Bazaar is situated on the lap of Khumbila Peak, a vibrant and colorful Sherpa town. It is also famous as a central area for selling food, trekking gear, and other necessary goods.
We start with a steep one-hour climb to the Syangboche airstrip. Hike the Syangeboche airport runway at 3,780m and slow ascent to Khunde passing numerous stone Buddhist Chorten. In the meantime visit Syangeboche hilltop to get an excellent view of Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Nuptse, Lhotse, Tawche, and Kwangde mountains.
In addition, there are also some snowy mountains that are visible at 360 deg angles just before Khumjung village. It is the largest village in Khumbu, at the foothill of the sacred Khumbila peak. Visit the Khumjung monastery, and Khunde Hospital, and explore the entire Khumjung, the oldest Sherpa community on Everest. Follow the Khumjung Monastery trail which offers Yeti Scalp.
Continue trek to Dhole by following the same route to Base camp until Sanasa, and the trail ascends to Mong la 4000 meters. From the Mong La hilltop, you will see panoramic views of various mountains. You trek steeply descend passing through Phortse Tenga and from there, the trail climbs steeply to Dhole, through rhododendron and birch forest festooned with hanging mosses and lichens.
After Dhole, the trek leads regularly along the side of the valley, where the small and thorny bushes give way to scrub juniper as the altitude increases. The trail passes many summer settlements, yaks are taken to these pastures to graze in the summer months. An excellent Cho Oyu mountain view is just ahead of you, while back down the valley are the peaks of Kantega and Thamserku.
Later Macherma, the voyage leads over a very scenic trail to Pangka, descend slightly, following one of the melt-water Rivers which flow down the west side of the Ngozumpa Glacier. We ascend rocky mountains into the valley by the side of the glacier, passing the first of the holy lakes. We soon arrive at the second Gokyo Lake, crossing the path which heads across the glacier to Cho La (5,420m). The third lake known as Dudh Pokhari will appear and on its eastern shore is the settlement of Gokyo. Walk along with the Gokyo Lake corner, you can reach the Gokyo resorts.
This Gokyo valley is amazing that has a business exchange center where the Sherpa people run lodges to provide the best services to the trekkers. Leaving Dzongla, ascend 20 minutes up, and gently follow the path to Lobuche with an alpine route or a climbing route through difficult terrain in the high mountains. Nomads can spend most of their spare time rambling and climbing after reaching at Lobuche Lodge for better altitude adaption to sleep overnight.
The ice-cold Cho la pass route is a hazardous hike. Therefore, we suggest for fit trekkers [free individual tourists] and Git [group inclusive tourists] go with an expert guide because the Cho la pass death ratio is high. If Cho la Pass weather is bad while crossing to Dzongla Nepal, the chance of becoming altitude sickness is very common. Throughout history, many backpackers rescued to Lukla – Kathmandu every year.

Nuptse, Lho-La, and Khumbutse mountains appear at a stone-throwing distance. Hike the Everest Base Camp and test your body with altitude fitness and return to Gorak Shep for an overnight stay in the same day.
A rough and tough plan for today is a hike from Gorakshep to Kala Patthar viewpoint and descend downhill to Pheriche village. Many people hike to Kalapathar to get sunrise. It’s a superb sunrise tour especially the best for photoshoots. So, get ready to climb Kala Patthar (5,550m.) for sunrise and enjoy the view of sunrise. Tourists can see Mount Everest, Mt. Pumori, Lingtren, Khumbetse, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku in a line from Kala Patthar.

Chola Pass Trek Review
Fantastic guiding service for the Gokyo and Everest Base Camp trek
Ammar and his team played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of our trip to Gokyo and Everest Base Camp. From the early planning stages, Ammar promptly and thoroughly addressed all our queries, making the preparation process smooth and reassuring.
During the trek, our guides, Kamal and Som, proved to be exceptional and attentive. Their extensive knowledge of the Khumbu valley and close ties with local businesses enabled us to secure excellent accommodations at each stop along the way.
Their expertise also came to the forefront when some members of our group needed to detour to lower elevations. Kamal and Som swiftly rearranged a different program, ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone.
For anyone considering a trek in the Everest region, I wholeheartedly recommend Ammar and his team. Their dedication, professionalism, and genuine care will undoubtedly make your journey an unforgettable and enriching experience.

Everest Base Camp Trek with Bishnu Guide
We have booked Everest base camp trek with a Gokyo Treks and Expedition, a local agency in Nepal. Like other trekking, we choose a guide Bishnu Panday for our Everest holiday. Although it is a peak season there were very less trekkers in the region because of covid-19 travel restrictions.
Ammar, owner of the agency was friendly and answered all of my questions, and offered a cheaper deal to us. Luckily we had good weather, a perfect Lukla flight, and also from base camp, we achieved the most amazing view of Khumbu Icefall and little stone stupas, an open memorial park of death climbers.
Besides of trekking, Ammar took us to the world heritage sites of Kathmandu. Thanks, Ammar for arranging a great trip for us. We are hoping to be back for next adventure in the coming spring season in Nepal. – Martha Kipar, Garmisch, Germany
Response from Gokyo Treks Nepal

Everest Base Camp trek via Chola Pass and Gokyo
I recently completed my wish list of going to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo with assistance of Gokyo Treks and Expedition, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to go with the company. Ever since I contacted Gokyo Treks, Ammar Guni has assisted me with lots of decisions and given me advices, from what to expect on my trip to what are the essentials needed.
I was greeted warmly by Ammar when I touched down at Kathmandu airport, stayed at his house, and had a nice dinner with his family. Ammar even walked me to Thamel to get remaining essentials for my trip, and he made it so much easier since I’m not local.
While trekking, I was assigned a guide who then became friend, Tej Regmi, a thoughtful guide and genuine at doing his work. He gave full attention especially when crossing Chola Pass glacier which is dangerous. Tej even suggested alternative trekking routes since I was finishing my trip earlier than expected. The best is, friends who I knew along my trip even complimented him for being thoughtful.
Overall, I’m very happy with services by Ammar and his team, and for me their actions have spoken louder than words. Thanks for the great experience Gokyo Treks and Expedition! I strongly recommend them if you’re visiting Nepal.
