Lukla Airport, also known as Tenzing Hillary Airport, is a small airport located in the town of Lukla in the Solukhumbu District of Nepal. The airport serves as the gateway to the Sagarmatha National Park and the famous Mount Everest, making it a popular destination for trekkers and mountaineers. It is situated at an elevation of 2,845 meters (9,334 feet) above sea level and has a single runway that is only 527 meters (1,729 feet) long and 20 meters (66 feet) wide.

Due to the challenging terrain and unpredictable weather conditions, only experienced pilots are permitted to land at Lukla Airport. Several airlines are operating daily flights to and from Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla takes around 30 minutes.

Despite its reputation for being a dangerous airport, Lukla Airport has an excellent safety record, and thousands of tourists safely pass through it every year. However, due to the airport’s limited capacity, flights can be delayed or canceled due to poor weather conditions or other factors, so travelers should plan their trips accordingly.

The flight takes around 35 minutes, and the airport lies at an elevation of 2,860 meters (9,383 feet) above sea level.

However, it’s one of the most dangerous airports in the world due to its location, geography, and weather conditions.

Firstly, the airport is located in the eastern Himalayas of Nepal at an altitude of 2,845 meters (9,334 feet), making it one of the highest airports in the world. The high altitude of the airport means that the air is thin, and the runway is shorter than most airports, making it difficult for planes to take off and land.

Secondly, the runway at Lukla is only 527 meters (1,729 feet) long, which is significantly shorter than a standard runway and has a steep incline at one end and a sheer drop at the other. It means that pilots must make a steep descent to land and a steep climb to take off, which requires considerable skill and experience.

Finally, the weather conditions at Lukla airport can be challenging, especially during the monsoon season (June to September) and the winter season (December to February), which can cause low visibility, high winds, and unpredictable weather patterns. The weather conditions can change rapidly, making it difficult for pilots to navigate the runway and land safely.
