Its turquoise waters, surrounded by lush forests and snowy peaks, create a dreamlike setting rich in biodiversity.

Known also as Mahendra Lake, it is Nepal’s largest freshwater lake and a true hidden gem. Beyond the landscapes, the trek immerses visitors in authentic Himalayan culture, providing a deep connections with traditional village life.

Trek to Rara is moderately challenging, featuring steep ascents and occasional altitude related demands. Trekkers require a trekking permit to enter into the Rara National Park, possible to purchase either in Jumla or in Kathmandu.

Lodging includes basic guesthouses near the lake, while camping offers a true wilderness retreat. Don’t miss a hike to Murma Hill at 3,690 meters and it rewards trekkers with extensive views over Rara Lake and its surrounding landscapes.

From September to November and April to May months are the best time for Rara lake trek in Nepal. During the months, the skies are clear, rainfall is minimal, and the mountain views are at their finest. However, whether in peak season or quieter months, Rara Lake promises a peaceful, off the beaten path Himalayan experience you won’t forget.
