Tsum Valley Trek

Your trek staff will come to your hotel at early in the morning at 6 am to pick you up. From Kathmandu to Machha Khola driving, we pass the popular town called Dhading Besi, Arughat, Arket Bazaar, to Soti Khola and subsequently to the origin of the Budi Gandaki river through the dirt road. It’s a full day an adventure bus drive to Machha Khola however, book a private jeep from Kathmandu to Macha Khola drop [extra cost] if you wish to drive comfortably. A private jeep drive from your hotel in Kathmandu to Machha Khola drop off extra cost is US$ 150 for a group of 6 people capacity jeep.

After crossing the Machha Khola and Khrola best, there is a hot spring called “Tatopani” situated on the bank of Budhi Gandaki river. Follows a forested area after this toward Dovan, although there is a huge rapid at Budhi Gandaki in between the journey. As the elevation increases, the rapids and the scenery goes a complete transformation. At Jagat, there is a police check post where Tsum valley restricted trekking permit will check.

From Jagat, after descending a long series of stone steps back down to the river, we then climb on wonderful stone steps along a terraced hillside to the small hamlet of Saguleri and Sirdibas, from where we can see the impressive Sringi Himal (7187m). Continue to pass through the charming villages during the day to upstream, and again a steep climb to reach Philim village. Philim is a nice place to take lunch as there are two trails where one crosses a bridge and heads for the Manaslu classical trail and for Tsum valley heads right and then ascends for a couple of hours to Lakuwa Lodge.

Today, we take the right trail and head down for half an hour before it then ascends steeply up. Hike for 30 minutes with a descent to the riverside and cross the beautiful wooden bridge, before the final ascent of up to an hour to Chumling. Chumling is located at an altitude of 2,386 meters. They have a primary level school, and a small clinic, with great views of the Ganesh Himal range. Tourist can experience that how local people import goods from Tibet.

Your footsteps today further will have an immersive trekking experience through the heart of the Tsum Valley. It ascends gradually, crossing suspension bridges over the Shiar Khola River and passing through traditional Tibetan influenced villages. Along the way, you’ll encounter prayer wheels, mani walls, and chortens, reflecting the region’s deep Buddhist heritage.

As you climb higher, the landscape opens up to breathtaking panoramic views of Ganesh Himal and the surrounding peaks. Your final stretch leads to Chhokangparo, the largest settlement in Tsum Valley, where you’ll experience authentic Tibetan culture, warm hospitality, and stunning mountain vistas. Due to the high altitude, a slow and steady pace is recommended for acclimatization.

Leaving Chhokangparo, the trail gradually ascends through the upper Tsum Valley, offering spectacular views of the Ganesh Himal and Buddha Himal ranges. As you trek towards Nile village, the last settlement before Mu Gompa, you’ll pass through ancient mani walls, chortens, and prayer flags, reflecting the deep rooted Buddhist culture of the region.

Beyond Nile, the path follows the Shiar Khola River, leading into an open, high altitude valley with a dramatic backdrop of snowy white mountains. After a steady climb, you’ll reach Mu Gompa, the highest and most significant monastery in Tsum Valley. This centuries old monastery, perched at 3,700m, is home to Buddhist monks and offers a serene, spiritual atmosphere. Its a peaceful journey through the high mountain landscapes of the Tsum Valley. It gradually descends, passing rugged terrain and remote villages. It’s lined with manicured fields, prayer flags, and chortens, creating a tranquil atmosphere.

As you trek, enjoy sweeping views of snowy peaks and the Tibetan plateau. After about six hours of steady descent, you’ll reach Rachen Gompa at 3,240m. This Buddhist monastery is known for its peaceful vibe and spiritual significance, making it an ideal spot for reflection. It is not only scenic but also a chance to experience local culture and Tibetan Buddhism.

From Rachen Gompa to Lokpa trail descends gradually through beautiful forests and traditional villages. You’ll pass by prayer flags, chortens, and manicured fields, typical of the Tsum Valley.

Along the way, enjoy views of the surrounding mountains and the peaceful landscape. After several hours of descent, you’ll arrive at Chumling at 2,386m. This is a typical and peaceful village that has a serene atmosphere and is a great place to rest before continuing your journey.

Chumling to Philim trekking path takes approximately 7 hours. After a brief walk from Lokpa, the trail intersects with the Manaslu Circuit route, leading towards Ekle Bhatti. From there, you’ll follow the scenic path along the Budhi Gandaki River, passing through lush forests and small villages. Along the way, cross suspension bridges and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

As you continue, immerse yourself in the local culture and the peaceful landscape. Upon reaching Philim at 1,570m, you’ll arrive at a picturesque Gurung village known for its terraced fields and traditional houses. It’s an ideal location to rest and prepare for the next stage of your trek.

Continue to descends through dense forests, passing by small villages and terraced fields. You’ll cross suspension bridges and follow the Budhi Gandaki River as it winds through the valley.

Along the way, enjoy views of the surrounding peaks and the tranquil river. It gradually leads you to Machha Khola at 700m, a charming village with a peaceful atmosphere. It’s a perfect spot to relax and recharge before continuing your trek.

As you leave the peaceful village, you’ll travel along winding mountain roads, that provides a stunning views of lush valleys, rivers, and majestic landscapes. Your drive will take you through small rural settlements and terraced fields, giving a glimpse of local life in the hills.

Your Journey by public Bus gradually descends, passing through suspension bridges and narrow roads carved into the mountainsides. As you approach Kathmandu, the landscape transitions into a more urban setting. This drive is a memorable way to conclude your trekking adventure, with stunning views at every turn. From the final Bus stop station, our guide will arrange a taxi transfer to drop you at your hotel in Thamel. Trip finish.
