Overview
The Three Passes Trek is a meticulously crafted journey that seamlessly blends three of Nepal’s most challenging high altitude routes. It offers the ultimate adventure in one of the world’s most breathtaking mountain landscapes.
Renowned as one of the most comprehensive treks in Nepal, this route provides an unparalleled exploration of the Everest region’s most iconic sights. Trekkers traverse the formidable high passes of Renjo La (5,360m/17,586 feet), Cho La (5,368m/17,612 feet), and Kongma La (5,535m/18,099 feet), each presenting unique challenges and rewarding vistas.
An unforgettable visit to Gokyo Valley is a home to stunning turquoise lakes set against a backdrop of towering Himalayan giants. Additionally, the ascent to Kala Patthar offers an unrivaled, up close view of Mount Everest (8,848m/29,029 feet) and its neighboring peaks, making it a must experience moment.
Beyond its mesmerizing landscapes, this trek provides a deep cultural immersion into Sherpa heritage. Travelers pass through traditional high altitude villages, explore ancient Buddhist monasteries, and experience the legendary warmth of the Sherpa people. Along the way, fluttering prayer flags, intricately carved mani stones, and serene monasteries showcase the region’s rich spiritual traditions.
As we traverse the Thame Nagpa La Valley en route to Gokyo Valley, trekkers encounter a strikingly diverse range of landscapes, from lush forests to rugged alpine terrain. Given the extreme altitude and unpredictable weather, proper preparation is essential, and checking the latest weather forecasts before crossing the high passes is strongly recommended for a safe and successful journey.
Khumbu territory is home to rare species such as the elusive snow leopard, Himalayan Tahr, and musk deer. Birdwatchers can spot the Himalayan monal (Nepal’s national bird) along with various pheasant species, while smaller mammals like red pandas and Himalayan marmots may also be encountered.
As trekkers ascend, the landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation—from lush rhododendron, pine, and juniper forests at lower elevations to alpine shrubs and hardy grasses before giving way to barren, glacier carved terrain, where only mosses and lichens cling to the rocks.
Challenging yet deeply rewarding Three Passes Trekking is an ultimate test for those seeking to push their limits while immersing themselves in the raw beauty and cultural richness of the Everest region. With careful preparation and a spirit of adventure, this trek promises an unforgettable journey through some of the most spectacular landscapes on Earth.

Best time for three passes trek
The best time for Three Passes Route is during the pre monsoon (spring) and post monsoon (autumn) seasons. From late April to early June, the weather is generally stable, with clear skies and moderate temperatures. This period has an excellent visibility and relatively mild conditions, making it ideal for crossing the high passes and enjoying the stunning Himalayan scenery. Additionally, spring brings blooming rhododendrons, adding vibrant colors to the landscape.
Autumn, from late September to early November, is another optimal time for the trek. During this season, the weather is crisp and clear, with less chance of rain and snow. Trails are well trodden and the views are often spectacular, providing a clear perspective of the majestic mountains and landscapes. Both seasons offer favorable conditions for trekking, but it’s important to prepare for possible weather changes and pack accordingly.
Three Passes Trek difficulty level
3 Passes Trek is known for its high difficulty due to challenging terrain and demanding physical requirements. Crossing the high altitude passes of Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La, each over 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), involves steep ascents and descents, and potentially icy or snowy conditions.
Therefore, trekkers need a high level of cardiovascular fitness, prior higher altitude experience, and the ability to adapt to rapid altitude changes. Proper altitude acclimatization is essential; trek gradually, stay hydrated, and listen to your body to avoid altitude sickness.

Consuming alcohol and smoking cigarettes are strongly discouraged during the journey, particularly as you ascend above 3,000 meters. At this altitude, the risk of Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS) significantly increases, thereby making the trek more challenging. Consequently, avoiding these substances is crucial to maintaining your stamina and reducing the likelihood of health complications.
If symptoms arise, descend immediately and seek medical attention if necessary, as severe cases may require evacuation to Kathmandu. Regular aerobic and strength training will also help in preparing for the trek’s physical demands.
Distance and elevation maps are just a guideline about the edge of fitness level. Although it is a reputable hike to cross over the adventure high passes, it is not fit for novices.
Notes for Mount Everest three passes trekkers!
Trek to Everest three passes as stated above is a standard package plan, possible to revise according to your wishes. Local politics, landslides, cancellation of local flights, weather, transport, or a multitude of other factors that are beyond our control can result in a change of itinerary during on trip.
It is, however, very incredible that the itinerary would be extensively altered. If alterations are necessary the leader will decide the best alternative option, taking into consideration the best interests of the whole group. When a change does occur, we do everything we can to minimize its effect, but we cannot be responsible for the results of changes or delays.

Three Passes Trek Review
3 Passes Trek Experience
Great experience on the 3 passes trek end of November. We choose Gokyo Treks and Expedition to arrange our trip to the Himalayas. Ammar booked accommodation for the Kathmandu city tour and 3 passes for adventure travel. Felt very safe throughout the trip with my guide Som Shrestha. Recommend yak tracks on the passes around this time of the year and a good sleeping bag, as it was sometimes – 5 degrees Celsius at night inside the room.
The 3 passes hike price were very competitive, hilltops are offering terrific views but the trail is often sleeper and snowy. The trip was not the easiest nor dangerous. Other than that, we are totally happy with the Gokyo Treks agency service. – Patrick and Robbins Derby, in North Hollywood, California.

Three Passes Trek including Everest base camp
We were a group of four (my wife, our daughter, and her boyfriend) and we started on October 20th from Kathmandu, flying into Lukla and trekking for 16 days up Everest base camp and Kalapattar. This was our third time of trekking in Nepal before we had been in Langtang/Gosainkund and in the Annapurna region up to ABC, and the Everest region is certainly the most spectacular one. But, obviously, trek over three passes route is also the most crowded one.
Ammar had been a perfect guide for us, extremely helpful in choosing the proper lodges, getting our food ready in time, and just making life as easy and entertaining as possible. Although he is young, he has a lot of experience in these regions, and, what is very helpful, a lot of friends among the locals. This can be useful: for example, the boss at the airport in Lukla is his friend. You might have heard of problems arising in Lukla when the weather is bad for several days and the planes cannot fly.
Then tourists are getting nervous because they might miss their international flights. And here Ammar´s friend would be very helpful and find you a place on a plane for flying out. Furthermore, Ammar´s rates are quite decent, much cheaper than when you book with one of the large trekking organizations. And finally, he managed to choose three porters for us who were the best we had.
They even came back several times, after they had reached the day’s destination, to help us with our own bags. I had never experienced that with other porters we had so far. Don´t hesitate to ask further questions, I am happy to answer, and had a good time there. Best wishes, and namaste (as training for Nepal ) – Ingeborg and Hannes from Austria

Three Passes Trek in Nepal
I successfully completed my Three Passes Trek in Sagarmatha National Park with the help from Gokyo Treks & Expedition. The agency helped me arrange my porter and guide and flights between Kathmandu and Lukla. Agency operator Ammar was very friendly and helpful. Although I opted for a self-planned free and easy trek, Ammar offered me lots of good advice during my planning. When I arrived in Kathmandu, Ammar also met up with me to guide me through the trek arrangement. The service was professional. – Tony Deng from Singapore

Response from Gokyo Treks Nepal
Thank you Tony Deng for your time to review the Three Passes Trek in the Everest region of Nepal. We hope to serve you again on your next trips to the Himalayas.
