Best time for Annapurna circuit trek

The best time to trek in the Annapurna Circuit is during the autumn months starting from September to November and spring season from March to May. During these months, the weather is typically clear and dry, with moderate temperatures and low rainfall, making it ideal for trekking.

In the autumn season, the skies are usually clear with excellent visibility of the mountains, and the weather is generally stable. The temperatures are mild during the day but can get chilly at night, especially at higher elevations. This season is considered to be the best time for trekking in the Annapurna Circuit as the weather is favorable, the skies are clear, and the scenery is at its best.

Thorong la pass

In the spring season, the temperatures are also mild, and the weather is stable. At this season is also a great time for Annapurna Circuit trekking, as the Rhododendron forests along the trail are in full bloom, creating a colorful landscape.

While it’s possible for Annapurna Circuit trekking in the winter months from December to February, it’s generally considered more challenging. Due to cold temperatures, snow-covered trails, and higher risk of avalanches, especially around the Thorong La Pass.

Likewise, certain sections especially above Gunsang to Muktinath trail could be difficult to navigate. It’s recommended to have prior trekking experience, appropriate hiking gears, and well preparation for the severe winter conditions if attempting the trek during the winters.

Additionally, Trekking the Annapurna Circuit during the monsoon months from June to August presents challenges due to heavy rainfall and the risk of landslides. The trails can be muddy, slippery, and less visibility in a lower elevation. Often mountain views might be obscured by clouds, and there’s a higher chance of leeches and insects.

However, some sections might be affected by flooding or trail damage.

Annapurna Circuit trek difficulty

The Annapurna Circuit trek is considered moderately challenging. Journey to Thorong La involves varied terrain, altitudes, and weather conditions, requiring a reasonable level of physical fitness and some hiking experience.

Usually it takes about 10-16 days to complete and reaches a maximum altitude of 5,416 meters (17,769 feet) at Thorong La Pass. Often Thorong la is covered with snow and ice in the wintertime therefore it’s important to acclimatize properly and prepare well enough for changes in weather and trail conditions.

Additionally, travelling on a solo journey entails relatively higher costs concerning transportation and private trips. Hence, solo travelers have the option to join a group tour or opt for a private trekking, at the very least by hiring a guide, ensuring a safer experience while trekking the Annapurna Circuit.

Although, the nature trail is possible to customize at your request to accommodate your specific requirements. Local politics, landslides, cancellation of local flights, weather, transport, or a multitude of other factors that are beyond our control can result in a change of itinerary en route.

It is, however, very incredible that the itinerary would be extensively altered. If adjustment are essential the leader will decide the best alternative option, taking into consideration the best interests of the whole group. When a change does occur, we do everything we can to minimize its effect, but we cannot be responsible for the results of changes or delays.

How to reach Basisahar from Kathmandu?

Well, since there is not an airport in Besisahar, you should follow the road journey which is another adventure on your journey. That’s why you should use either a Public Bus/Mirco Bus or a Private Car/Jeep/Hiace to make your journey comfortable. You will get 12 seater Microbuses that depart from BG MALL supermarket at Gongabhu Bus station every 30 minutes in the morning.

Likewise, a 35-seater local bus also departs from the same place to Besisahar, and both types of Buses take about 6 hours from KTM. If you wish to make a more comfortable journey to Besisahar from Kathmandu or want to get there quickly, you can book a private Car/Jeep/Hiace (depending on group size) paying an extra cost.

The best Annapurna Circuit Trek

This past May (2016) I completed the Annapurna Circuit in 15 days, largely thanks to the guiding services provided by Gokyo Treks and Expedition. At the start of my trip, I had planned to hike Manaslu but due to an illness with my trekking partner, I had to change plans last minute. Fortunately, Ammar (owner of Gokyo) was able to help me and provide info, which ultimately led to me choosing Annapurna. During my 2 days in Kathmandu, Ammar and his family also provided a very nice and convenient homestay while helping me prepare for my trek (buying jackets, etc.).

The trek itself was everything I had imagined and more – my guide, Kamal (KC) was helpful and knowledgeable. He knew the best routes to take and provided me assurance, help, and motivation when necessary (i.e. when I had some stomach issues). KC was also more than just a guide – by the end, he became a friend. He’s somebody I felt very comfortable around, and kept things interesting. I’d highly recommend not only Gokyo Treks but also KC as a guide. Additionally, the prices offered by Gokyo were the best I could find when compared to several other agencies. Finally, the services Gokyo provides to the community (schools, tutoring, etc) made it a no-brainer to choose them. Hopefully, this review will help others make their decision – having an experienced guide made everything so much easier (knowing what lodging, food places, etc.)

I did the Annapurna circuit and had a wonderful time. The circuit is a bit touristic, but still, the nature is phenomenal and in the offseason, it’s really not crowded, in May the weather is still great. I did the tour with a great company which Id like to write about here.

Gokyo Treks & Expeditions are really professional and care a lot about their customers. They can provide you with nearly everything and the prices are really reasonable, especially compared to other trekking agencies. Everyone I met was very friendly and welcoming and I always had a good feeling traveling with Gokyo Treks. I did the Annapurna circuit with one guide and had an excellent experience, so from my point, I can just give a strong recommendation.
